In 1950, when Deborah Mitford became the 11th Duchess of Devonshire, with Chatsworth, Bolton Abbey, Hardwick Hall, and Lismore Castle to look after, she rolled up her sleeves and tackled debt with business acumen and redecoration with great flair, becoming perhaps the most memorable chatelaine of any English estate. In 1977 Deborah—controversially—opened her Chatsworth Farm Shop, which paved the way for fancy farm businesses like Daylesford and King Charles’s Highgrove Farm Shop. Now, with Lismore Castle, Laura Cavendish has taken on the mantle for a new generation, with her eco-mindedness and farm-to-table philosophy and, like her husband’s grandmother, fashioning a commercial opportunity but in her own style and for the 21st century. Laura began her career in fashion and remains influential in the industry. She is a former model and editor at Harper’s Bazaar. She has worked as a fashion consultant for major stores and brands, including Selfridges, and has sat on the New Generation board of the British Fashion Council since 2010.
